Coronavirus: By the end of January, nine people died and thousands of people have been infected by a coronavirus in China. The outbreak of the virus was first seen in the city of Wuhan in China in December. In addition to China, people infected with coronavirus have also been identified in the US, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand. Scientist Leo Poon, who first decoded the virus, thinks it likely started in an animal and spread to humans.
What is Coronavirus?
A coronavirus is a large group of viruses that are common in animals. According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, these are called zoonotic in scientific language, which means that they can be transported from animals to humans.
Coronavirus Symptoms Coronavirus
symptoms include runny nose, cough, sore throat, possibly headache and fever, which may last for a few days.
The virus can be more deadly for people with a weakened immune system (elderly and children). It can cause more severe respiratory tract disease like pneumonia or bronchitis in them.
How Coronavirus spreads
The virus can be spread by human interaction with animals. When it comes to spreading the virus from human to human, it is when a person comes in contact with the secretions of the infected person. Coughing, sneezing, or shaking hands of an infected person can cause risk. After touching an infected person, touching their mouth, nose or eyes can also cause a virus infection.
Coronavirus Treatment Coronavirus
is not yet a specific treatment. Mostly it goes away on its own. Doctors can relieve symptoms by giving pain or fever medicine.
According to the CDC, a humidifier or hot shower in the room can help with a sore throat or cough. Drinking plenty of fluids, resting and sleeping as much as possible can comfort the patient.
How you can prevent it (coronavirus prevention)
There is no vaccine to protect from this family of viruses, at least not yet. Trials are underway for its vaccine. The World Health Organization has given guidance to countries on how they can prevent the virus, they are: –
- As far as possible, do not come in contact with an infected person.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- If you are ill, stay home and avoid the crowds.
- When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose and keep things you touch disinfected.
