Awarded Iranian Filmmaker One Year in Jail for Filming

Web Desk – Iranian filmmaker Mohammed Rasul Af, who won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival, has been sentenced to one year in prison for his films. His lawyer said this.

Three of Rasul Af’s films were termed propaganda against the Iranian system and two years were also banned from making their films.

The lawyer said that a court order was sent to Rasul Af through a text message. They do not intend to arrest. Instead, they will appeal the conviction and present a verdict of the authorities against the prison under which 54,000 prisoners have been released from prison across the country to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

Government media did not release any news about the punishment or any comment from the judicial authorities.

Rasool Af recently won the Golden Bear Award for the Berlin Film Festival’s highest honor on his film Devil Wisdom. In it, they criticized the death penalty and limited personal freedom in Iran.

He could not go to Germany to receive the award because the government has banned his travels.

Rasul Af has also served a one-year sentence on filmmaking. In 2011 his film By Hope Didar won an award at the Cannes Film Festival but he was not allowed to go to France.
